YOUTH PROGRAM
Participating in the human and social services program enables young people to develop work and social skills. This will serve as a stepping-stone to future productive living in the community.
Special skills which young people will learn through these programs include: communication, leadership, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, organizational skills, life skills and self esteem, social justice and responsibilities.
The youth program is implemented as a rural community based local initiative through central government, local government structures and other NGO assisted projects in the district. It also works through community organizations such as churches, mosques, and local councils to reach both in and out of school youth.
Through this initiative, LDI is assisting the government of Uganda to secure and protect the future generation of the nation with hope that the activities of this project will be replicated in the other areas of the country.
Formal Education
Primary education is no longer enough to prepare young people for employment. LDI will encourage secondary education and skills based learning which are essential elements to become part of the global economy and in the building of democratic institutions.
Vocational Training/Skills Building
The purpose of this is to build capacity and to develop the skills of the clients. At the beginning, due to the limited capacity of LDI, most of these training programs will be contracted to existing institutions. Skills training will be done on the job, especially for the clients who are naturally talented or already competent in an area. The first client trainees will learn skills that ensure independent income generation. Research into community needs will identify the programs to be offered.
